OROFACIAL MYOFUNCTIONAL THERAPY - HOW IT WORKS
The four goals of myofuctional therapy are:
- Nasal breathing all day and night
- Lips sealed all day and night
- Tongue on the roof of your mouth all day and night
- Correct chewing and swallowing
and to achieve these goals without compensations
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is similar to physical therapy, but for your mouth and face. It is designed to achieve the four goals (without compensations) and restore proper breathing and oral function through a series of exercises focused on the muscles of the mouth, face, head and neck. We see patients 6 years old and up.
In a war between muscle and bone, muscle always wins.
Comprehensive Exam
The first visit will be a 90-minute comprehensive exam. It will include an evaluation and examination of the muscles of your mouth, throat and airway. We will discuss your specific compensations and possible underlying issues. During this visit we will take several photographs and videos. We will then discuss if there are any myofunctional disorders present and explain how myofunctional therapy can address them, as well as make referrals to other providers as needed.
This exam is $200 which will be collected at the time of service.
Treatment Plan
Once all your information is gathered and the comprehensive exam has been completed, we will present our findings and a treatment plan including cost of therapy based on how many sessions are required. This is done virtually and lasts about 30 minutes.
Therapy
Therapy sessions are every 2-3 weeks and are between 30-60 minutes long. For convenience, they are usually completed virtually. For optimal results, you will be expected to perform exercises for about 5-10 minutes, twice a day.
Therapy generally lasts 6-12 months.
Cost
We offer prepaid packages and discount for paying in full prior to the start of your treatment or you can choose a monthly payment plan.* We believe that cost shouldn't be a deterrent to someone receiving treatment. We will do everything in our power to find a plan that works for your budget.
Dental and medical insurance usually do not cover costs associated with myofunctional therapy, however, we do accept funds from HSA and FSA accounts.
*The cost of the consultation is not included in the cost of therapy.
